Student Resources
We've featured some resources below that you might find helpful, please visit the links provided to get more detailed information. You can also find the more-extensive on the right and hopefully you will find everything you need.
Optimizing Your Penn Engineering Experience
The Week of Workshops(10/5-10/8) is over but you can still reap the benefits! The partners are as follows:
Advancing Women in Engineering
Center for Undergraduate Research & Fellowships
Counseling & Psychological Services
Engineering Dean’s Advisory Board
Engineering Student Activities Council
Greenfield Intercultural Center
- Nutrition PowerPoint
- Healthy Living PowerPoint
Student Health Advisory Board
Weingarten Learning Resources Center
The Tutoring Center
The Tutoring Center offers Penn students a variety of peer tutoring services. All Tutoring Center services
are free for matriculating undergraduates. Tutorials are generally offered for the core introductory and intermediate undergraduate courses. Students may sign up for appointments online at the Tutoring Center or at one of the Satellite Centers located on campus. In addition, the Center offers an Old Exam File. All resources can be found online - learn more here. (CIS offers its own tutoring program, please click here if you are a CIS student.)
Counseling and Psychological Services
The Counseling and Psychological Services offers a number of services designed to help students develop a greater understanding of themselves and others and to perform more effectively as students. Students may choose to see a psychologist on an individual basis or to attend a structured or unstructured group. A number of theme-oriented workshops are offered, including stress management, reducing test anxiety, assertiveness, career choice, and weight control. Upon request, staff members present mini-workshops on a number of topics in the residence halls. The staff is also available to consult with students and student groups on topics such as program development, group process, and leadership and communication skills.
Weingarten Learning Resources Center
The Weingarten Learning Resources Center, comprised of the Office of Learning Resources and Student
Disabilities Services, supports and enhances the academic experiences of Penn's undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Office of Learning Resources provides professional consultation services in university relevant skills such as academic reading, writing, study strategies, and time management to the Penn community. This academic support is provided through a varied menu of services and programs. Student Disabilities Services provides comprehensive, professional services and programs for students with disabilities to ensure equal academic opportunities and participation in University-sponsored programs.
Pre-Medical Advising
Many students who aspire to go to medical school choose the engineering school to satisfy their pre-med requirements while developing technical skills that give them an edge over their counterparts in other pre-med programs. Many of your freshman engineering courses (such as Math 104 and 114, Freshman English Seminars, Physics 150 and 151, and Chem 101 and 102 with labs) will help fulfill pre-med requirements. For more specific information on pre-med coursework, please contact the Health Professions Advisor at Career Services, Suite 20, McNeil Building, (215) 898-7324. Learn more here.
Computing & Educational Technology Services
CETS provides computing support and related educational services to the students, faculty, and staff of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Our services include several PC and linux computer labs, multimedia classroom systems, both online and walk-in consulting support, wired and wireless networking, e-mail, web services, printing and more. Accounts on these systems are available to all SEAS students, faculty, staff, and students taking SEAS courses. CETS also provides computer facilities management for other Engineering School departments. If you need help with a computer-related issue, please either email cets@seas.upenn.edu or call (215) 898-4707.
Penn Engineering Office of Multicultural Programs
The Office of Multicultural Programs develops programs for recruitment, retention and support for underrepresented minority students interested in engineering careers both within and outside the PENN community. Programs for undergraduates include the Freshman Coaching Program (a structured study group program, with 3-5 students per group), an engineering tutoring program designed to help students from non-traditional backgrounds, and the Alliance for Minority Participation Program, which includes undergraduate research opportunities for minority students. The office is an academic support service also providing social activities for student interaction. It is a strong resource center for student organizations such as the National Society for Black Engineers, and the Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers.
Technical Communications Program
The Technical Communications Program is designed to improve undergraduate engineering students’ proficiency in the skills of communication and use of library resources. The TCP and the Engineering Library work hand in hand in this endeavor.
Advancing Women in Engineering
The Advancing Women in Engineering (AWE) program is dedicated to recruiting, retaining, and promoting women in Penn Engineering. This is done in three ways: 1) Develop and support initiatives to increase the number of women interested in studying engineering at Penn and elsewhere; 2) Enhance the overall academic experience of female students in Penn Engineering via targeted curricular development and increased research and professional opportunities; and 3) Create and support social and networking opportunities for women in engineering.
Undergraduate Research
Undergraduates are doing real research at Penn Engineering. Taking advantage of the assistance of willing faculty, liaisons with top industry professionals, and laboratories dedicated to undergraduates, SEAS students are breaking new ground in preparation for graduate school, professional school, or industry.
As a student at Penn, you are encouraged to join faculty researchers in investigating a wide spectrum of technological, scientific, and medical problems. Faculty members are readily accessible to discuss your research interests and to help you find a project that you will find exciting and rewarding. You can also get credit for research activity during the academic year by undertaking an independent study course with a faculty member. To learn more about research opportunites, use this link.
