the IEEE Third Millennium Medal.  He is a Fellow of seven international scientific and technical societies, i.e., IEEE, American Physical Society (APS), Optical Society of America (OSA), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), SPIE, Union Radio-Scientifique Internationale (URSI), and Materials Research Society (MRS).  He has also received several teaching awards including the
Christian F. and Mary R. Lindback Foundation Award, the S. Reid Warren, Jr. Award (two times), and the W. M. Keck Foundation’s Engineering Teaching Excellence Award.  He has received the Honorary Doctorate (Doctor of Science in Technology honoris causa) from Aalto University in Finland (conferred on October 7, 2016) and the Honorary Doctorate (Dr. rer. nat. h.c.) from University of Stuttgart, Germany (conferred on November 18, 2016). His current research activities span a broad range of areas including nanophotonics, metamaterials, plasmonics, nano-scale optics, graphene optics, imaging and sensing inspired by eyes of certain
animal species, optical nanoengineering, time- reversal symmetry breaking and nonreciprocity, microwave and optical antennas, mathematics of fractional operators, and physics and engineering of fields and waves.  He is on the editorial boards of the journals Physical Review X (PRX), American Chemical Society (ACS) Photonics, Applied Physics Letters (APL) Photonics, Nanophotonics, Waves in Random and Complex Media, and the Istituto Superiore Mario Boella Book Series in Radio Science.  He was on the editorial boards of journal Metamaterials (2006-2012) and Journal of Electromagnetic Waves and Applications,
